Left Behind by Mackinley Clevinger, March 12, 2016
My vision has closed
The world fallen away
Left to two doors
And you in between
The road stretched behind
Footprints in the sand
Paired for so long
But you've stepped ahead
Confused at my stand
Stepped towards a door
You gesture to follow
Walked arm in arm
Joyous since the start
But the road has so changed
And sadly, we have not
You never saw
And you never knew
To you we were fine
As I fell apart
The prints in the sand
Ran two-by-two
Till one disappeared
And mine grew too deep
Behind either door
An unknown journey
One paired with you
The other free again
Easier to follow
Link arms once more
Apologize and go
Hope for the best
Harder to leave
Break our long bond
Blast my slow wounds
And let myself heal
You don't understand
I wouldn't let you
I promised you once
To carry your burdens
Weight upon weight
Stacked upon my back
Without relief, freedom
A promise fulfilled
I want it to be, that
Love is enough
Things will get better
But there's no end in sight
Memories so kind
Of early times and care
Now tainted too far
So I've come too a halt
I've noticed the door
But passed it before
You've skipped ahead
Unthinking of me
Impatient but waiting
I hate what this will do
A tentative step
Away from you
Desperate and seeking
Surprised and unknowing
Begging and sorry
But no chance remains
I pass through the door
Alone and afraid
Their tears and their sobs
Unforgettable, and left behind
