Oh, Brother by Mac Clevinger November 4, 2015
Oh, brother, let me tell you;
Of the tears in my eyes;
Of the knot in my soul;
Of the lump in my heart
Oh, brother, let me rest;
That I may stand up to the image in my name;
Be the man I'm believed to be;
Live the life of excellence I once walked;
Of the lies they tell of me;
Of the deeds I did and didn't do;
Of the armour they placed me within;
Oh, brother, how it constricts;
How it locks me down;
How it pins me here;
How I wish to escape;
Oh, brother, how it cuts;
To walk in shining light not my own;
To hear the myths they tell;
To be the truth beneath it all;
Oh, brother, free me!;
Rend this armour asunder and let me fly!
Infamy I call to thee;
Free me of their watching eyes;
Oh, brother, my eyes lie too;
They see the light when the armour's off;
The path is distant, I've strayed too far;
Yet still it calls and still I follow;
Oh, brother, to seek such a prize;
To surrender my soul, a different life I might've lived;
In the eternal quest for a different renown;
Whatever would I have done besides?
