Pride's Trail by Mackinley Clevinger, February 1, 2016
There stands a man so tall so proud
A dream fulfilled, a wish now found
But oh, what’s this, to fall from grace
And see your life of foul mistake
Where did you start, from whence you came?
You thought that life so long were a game
Idle in thought and idle in act
It all but passed when you found you lacked
Something to make your life not alone
A void once filled and emptied anew
A desolate plain where nothing new grew
In you rose a furious rage
The wish to write upon a new page
Struck out for glory, love, and more
To salve the pains of sedentary sores
A new life lived, a new path struck
One soul saved, considerable luck
But short is fortune, and fame long gone
Tried all he might, none sung his song
Life lived anew, still aimed towards death’s door
Desperation renewed, he shan’t be ignored
Forgotten his life, the message he learned
Forgotten the path, bridges all burned
A lasting imprint may be left in two ways
A soul re-forged, helped and remade
Another, darker course there still lay
Harder on heart but easier in way
To be seen from further and farther away
Lift one’s self up into light of day
Rise up from small, no more no less
And feel yourself for some time blessed
But burnt bridges leave little behind
No friends or aid to keep him in line
Up he rose towards light and sight
And down he fell towards hellish bite
He stood in light and felt its praise
But all too soon it dried in blaze
For soon he fell, heart turned all black
Dour and spoiled, no turning back
One life lost, living past shelter
The second gone when he knew no better
The third was bright for time in spotlight
But soon disappeared, no more, a blight
The quest for fame undid the man
Who came so far to have at hand
Life remade and better for all
Tis shame that greed spelt out his fall.
