For those who have finished or those who are impatient, the idea I'm trying to get across is of someone comparing themselves as they are at any given time with a future self, while appalled at how accepting their social circles are at believing that someone who is so utterly changed is still them. It's a bit of a thinkpiece, I guess, at how people change and yet are held to be the same person by those around them.
Anyways, that's my thought on it, you're free to dissent or agree, and even vocalize such thoughts if you wish. Expect the usual rate of content release, I'm not burnt out yet. Also, FYI, the date on the title is when I wrote it, while the date for the post is when it's posted. In case people noticed the difference and were alarmed. Have a nice day!
The Replacement by Mackinley Clevinger, February 16, 2016
There’s a man out there who looks like you
Laughs with your laugh, smiles the same
He visits your family, hugs your own mother
Can’t tell the difference, they love him the same.
But you see through that terrible disguise
‘Thinks he’s better, more advanced than I.’
It’s clear to you that he’s false, a fake
Yet he steps up to plate, and no one’s alarmed.
They know you true, just as you know them well.
How could they think that this man is the same?
When he’s so far gone, different, and changed?
So what if he’s gone further and farther than you?
You’re not the one who’s done what he’s done
How can they call him the same name as yours?
When he’s left you behind, and stolen your life?
The man doesn’t even think the same
Has a head full of weird new ideas.
He’s so far gone, and so much different
And now the world wants to replace you with him
They tell you to grow up, they want you to change
Hold this other up as a goal to attain
But that’s not you, why can’t they see?
To leave yourself behind, ‘that wouldn’t be me!’
