The Land I Love by Mackinley Clevinger, May 20, 2016
That white-stone floor, those stark-white trees
The land I love gave birth to me
And schoolyard fights, eternal summers
The house I keep needed the lumber
A lonely road and room to grow
Walls raised high that had lain too low
A broken heart, yet never alone
A core that wouldn’t yet turn to stone
A mind ever-searching remains ever-free
In memory the home, in hope return
In quest for more, the past must burn
Tears of love, none of grief
Promises made in truest belief
Left behind the trees would grow
As far away, new seeds sow
Two hearts joined to beat as one
Vows given true beneath loving sun
Those blue-tile floors and green-needle trees
A new land to love, not just for me
A discovery made and months to wait
Fears would grow as time grew late
When one walks in, another walks out
Never telling what the tears are about
A lifetime away, a reminder of the first
Promises held true, none left in the lurch
To child that knew of blue-tile floors
A wondrous sight, those white-stone moors
From green-needle trees to my stark-white
I remembered the land that gave me my life
